Surveying

Atlantic Station, Atlanta, GA

Lowe Engineers performed complete boundary surveys, topographic mapping, construction stakeout and data collection of existing conditions for this 138-acre hazardous-site development in downtown Atlanta, GA. Task included the field location of old utilities and entering the existing field conditions into a GIS database. Project also included the stake out location of new improvements, utility and other infrastructure. Utilities locations included stormwater, sewer, gas, electrical, cable, fiber optic, telephone and water. All of the existing data was merged with all new improvements for a complete GIS database. This was an OSHA managed job site due to it being because it was built on a hazardous landfill. The crews were subject to periodic medical monitoring and conducted weekly safety strategic sessions.

Chattahoochee Dam Removal Project, Columbus, GA
Corps of Engineers, Mobile District

* In 2006, this complex project received the Honor Award at the Engineers Week 2007 for Engineering Excellence by American Council of Engineering Companies of Georgia and the Georgia Engineering Alliance.

This Task Order was completed under an Indefinite Delivery Contract for the Mobile District of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. The overall and long term goal of this project is removing the existing old weirs and dams along the 3-mile section of the Chattahoochee River and constructing a white water rafting recreational area. The Corps of Engineers needed to have new hydrographic and topographic survey data in order to be able to demolish the existing dams and then design the white water course so our team of professionals provided new color aerial photography, new hydrographic surveys and new topographic surveys. Global Positioning Systems ( GPS) geodetic control surveys were performed to establish horizontal and vertical survey control points to be used to rectify the aerial imagery and to perform the necessary hydro and topo field surveys. GPS survey technology was used to position the boat during hydro surveys. The hydrographic survey data collection required that new surveys of the river corridor were performed.

Due to Lowe Engineers local knowledge of the post Hurricane Katrina conditions in the Lake Borgne area, Lowe Engineers was requested by SAIC to participate in their NOAA contract Task Order 2 Lake Borgne Debris Mapping Project.

Lowe Engineers technical geodetic surveys are in support of the tides program related to completing hydrographic surveys in the Lake Borgne, LA area. Tasks include providing tide stations, mobilization and logistic support, survey vessel and qualified survey personnel available at all times. Lowe set 6 stainless steel rods driven to refusal (80’) for new reference monuments, performed GPS geodetic control, and established 2 new tide gauges at the Martelle Castle in Lake Borgne.

The overall project consists of hydrographic survey of the entire Lake Borgne area, including 12 hours a day, seven days a week survey operations, collecting 100% side scan coverage and resulting single beam (dual frequency) depth sounding hydrographic survey operations. All operations are being conducted in accordance with NOAA specifications and deliverables.
